Why have I got two "Italic" buttons?

I have just installed my Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3) into my new computer. I notice that on the Tool Bar I have two Italic Buttons, they read from left to right "Times New Roman", "10", "B, I, I, U" and "Align Left". When I click on either of the two buttons they both highlight and when clicked again both de-select together.

I suppose I should try removing and re-installing the programme, but has someone any idea what could have caused this anomaly?

I don't know why you would get two identical buttons in a new installation,
but you certainly don't have to reinstall.

First try just getting rid of the extra button. Hold down the Alt key while
you drag the button off the toolbar. Close Word, and say yes if it asks to
save Normal.dot. Restart Word.

If the button comes back, it may be stored in an add-in or global template.
Look in Tools > Options > File Locations to see where the Startup folder is.
Close Word and use Windows Explorer to go to that folder. If there are any
templates there, move them to another folder, then restart Word. If that
fixes it, you can move the templates back into Startup one at a time,
restarting Word each time. The template that makes the button come back is
the culprit, and you may want to leave it out of Startup permanently.

If none of that works, shut down Word and go to the User Templates folder
(also listed in Folder Locations). Rename Normal.dot to OldNormal.dot and
restart Word. The program will build a new, fresh copy of Normal.dot. You
can use the Organizer to move any customizations from OldNormal.dot --
though if this was a new installation, there shouldn't be much.

Unbelievable. I have been customizing my toolbars for eons but never knew I
could remove buttons just by holding down the Alt key! I always go through
the "customize" etcetera route. What a great thing to know! Thanks for the
tip

Yes, it's one of those wonderful "undocumented" tips and tricks that can
actually get you into trouble if you use it accidentally. I've "known" it
for some time but never think to use it!
