Why if I put in a figure does it change it for me?

As an example, if I input a date as 5/23 (and I want it to stay that way), it
reverts to 23-May. It also automatically puts in the year as 2007 which I
don't want. How do I change this?

Assuming you don't really need it as a date, precede it with an apostrophe.

If you need it as a date, but want it to display as 5/23, format the cell as
m/d either before or after entering the value

The cell in which the 5/23 is listed must be formatted to be a date and you
must choose from the choices listed. highlight the data you want to format,
then click 'format->cells->date" and choose the format you like. should work
