Why is dotted outline of an autoshape appear offset from the shape

When Moving or sizing an Autoshape, the dotted outline is about 25% offset
from the actual shape

Without any more detail than you've provided about the type of AutoShape &
how it's formatted I'm afraid it's impossible to hazard a guess... And does
this "offset" remain after completing the operation? You haven't even
indicated which you happen to be using of the ~8-10 releases of Word
currently in circulation -- version & update level often make a difference.
