Why is Excel truncating my text to 255 characters?

I created a simply spreadsheet in Excel 2007 but am saving as a 5.0/95
workbook to be sure the recipient can open it. Everything was fine until I
emailed it, and it immediately truncated every cell to contain just 255
characters! Now I can't recover the missing data and I am going out of my
mind!

255 is the cell limitation in any version of Excel below 2007, why no
save it in xl2007 and ask the recipients to downloa

workbook regardless of what version they have

Thats the limitation with Excel upto version 7.0. You should have saved As
'Microsoft Excel 97-Excel 2003 & 5.0.95 Workbook (*.xls)' format

Even 2000, 2002 and 2003 versions allows 32,767 characters (text); with 1024
characters displayed in cell..

Jacob, thanks for that info, i knew you could physically type more
characters than you care to see in a cell, but i was truly under the
impression that it always get truncated to 255.

Even 2000, 2002 and 2003 versions allows 32,767 characters (text); with
1024
characters displayed in cell..
