Why is my email not automatically downloaded when I open Outlook?

B

barryd

I have just replaced Express with Outlook. However, I have to manually check
for any new email by clicking the send/receive button. I do have Outlook set
to open to my Inbox, but new messages still do not appear. Has anyone
experienced a similar problem?

Note, this answer assumes you had already configured Outlook for automatic
polling. A more accurate assumption is that you have not yet done so since
this is a new install.
So you first need to configure an automatic Send/Receive interval for
Outlook.
You failed to post your version so we can't tell you how.
If you can't figure it out by looking at Tools > Send/Receive > Send/Receive
Settings..., then provide more information.

Thanks for the tip. I tried it but it didn't work. In step three where it
says "type the new group name" - what am I supposed to use for a group name?

Thanks for your help. I'm using Outlook 2003. What does "automatic polling"
mean? And how do I configure an automatic send receive? Someone sent me MS
article 312336 explaining the solution but it doesn't work. Please advise

So if your Polling is set for 0, I believe the default time is 5, then it
should send automatically as well as recieve any time you start outlook?

Also now that I am thinking about it, where is that option at? I would have
thought that Outlook should be like Express except better.

I never did any special configurations to Express, I've been an express user
since 2.0 back when the net was a baby, so it is lost on me as to why you
select the "Send and Recieve Automatically" in Outlook it fails to function
as it does in Outlook Express.

With Express, I could click on a mail link from a website, and write my mail
and hit send, and it would send right then and there, no sitting in the
Outbox.

Same as when I start Express, as soon as I open it, it connects to the
servers and download my mail. Outlook should function the same way or better
yet doesn't and its very fustrating.

Same with Outlook. Click Tools>Options>Mail Setup and check the box labeled
"Send immediately when connected.:

Outlook does function that way when you define a send/receive interval.
Click Tools>Options>Mail Setup>Send/Receive. Check the boxes labeled
"Schedule an automatic send/receive every" and specify a value no less than
about eight minutes. This will cause Outlook to perform a send/receive when
you start it as well.

Ok in doing that, as soon as I started Outlook, it did pull my mail.

However will that solution apply to sending e-mail when outlook is not open?

Thank you for your help.

That's an issue, yes. Outlook will not send mail unless it's open.

Thank you Brian for getting me at least that far.

And at least when I open Outlook, it sends it as well. So I got half of my
issue to me solved, and the other half sounds like its a software issue with
Bill and the Crew.

Thanks again.
