WHY IS MY FILE SO BIG? How can I reduce the size of a file? I h.

I have a file that is 90 mb, with almost the same content as another file
that is only 20 mb. WHY??? Is there a way to compact it?

I have taken out all formulas and filters. What else could be making it so
big?

It kills my memory to open the blasted thing, and slows me down in all other
applications as well.

Most probably a large number of empty cells that are formatted. Select all
the empty cells in each worksheet (you'll probably have to do this in two
stages - all the cells to the right of the used block, then all those
below), then click on Edit | Clear | All. Then save the workbook. Hitting
Ctrl + End should now bring you to the bottom right-most cell of the used
area (i.e. cells with data) of each worksheet.

Just "Clearing" will not do the trick.

You must Edit>Delete the unused column and rows.

And as you mentioned......Save, close and re-open to see changes in size.

Thanks. Edit | Clear has *always* done the trick for me in XL 2k or 2003.
Perhaps Del Rows/Cols is needed for earlier versions? Also, I believe that
Save, Close & Open is required for versions < XL 2k (although I always do
that for good measure anyway under Xl 2k at work / 2003 at home)?

I use Excel 2002 and 2003.

Simply "clearing" does not change the CRTL + END point in my worksheets.

You are fortunate that Excel will "always" change the used range on your
worksheets when you simply Edit>Clear.
