Why is my FTP location unavailable?

C

CarlaAspenberg

I am using Publisher 2003. I am trying to post my Publisher webpage to a
geocities PLUS site using FTP. I entered the FTP location given to me with
my username and password. In the Save In box I clicked on FTP locations and
double clicked on the FTP site I had entered to publish my document, but was
told that the folder isn't accessible. Publisher said the folder may be in
an unavailable location or containe / or \. I don't know how to get around
this or change it. How do I get this webpage published?

David Thank you for your reply. Here is all the information I have,
geocities gave me the URL of ftp.geocities.com and I created an FTP locations
folder with this address along with my username and password. My actual
website address is
http://www.geocities.com/carlaaspenberg
I am concerned that maybe the computer won't opent the folder due to some
Firewall security installment in my computer. What do you think, any more
suggestions?
Thank you,
Carla

Hello David...I have been in the same situation as "MWaits" and have got the
this stage, where I am getting a "cannot connect" message. I have tried with
the firewall removed...without success. There is a Norton Systemworks
program on this computer, does any of its virus detection programming prevent
me from connecting ?

Thanks...Narelle

well running Norton products is like standing in a thunderstorm holding a
lightning rod but I couldn't tell you if that is directly effecting your
issue. If you can't connect with Publisher the next thing you need to do is
isolate the possibilities, so you need to use a 3rd party ftp client (google
for ws-ftp le) and see if that will connect.

Hi David...are the files for publisher 2003 compatible with publisher 2000 ?
(cowards way out !) Would I be able to produce my website on 2003 (which is
by far the better program) and send it on 2000 ( user friendly for dummies).
Cheers, Narelle

Hello David
Have taken this a few steps further. The files have all been saved as html
on the computer, but have not transferred to internet. Error Message reads
"Publisher could not save the file to the web. Check your URL or network
connection and try again."
Thanks...Narelle

what I said was google to look for ws-ftp, that is the same as Ipswitch, so
you already have it.

if you repro the connection problem with that then this is obviously not a
Publisher issue.

your next course of action is to double check that you are using the correct
URL for ftp on your account and that your account is ready for ftp access
and your log in info is accurate.

from your info you pasted you are connecting to the server, it says
connected there in line 2. so it's not only not a Publisher issue but it's
not any issue on your pc.

since it drops you after the log in entry it is clearly a log in issue,
which if you looked up the error code of 530 you would learn -
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/WS-19990628-DM01.htm

so you have to work this out with the host, if you are dealing with an idiot
there then ask for a supervisor.

a publisher 2003 pub file has to be saved down as a 2000 pub file. some
features will be lost.

html files produced by 2000 are very different from 2003.

the ftp and http clients in these versions is the same thing.

if your issue has been identified as not being a Publisher issue then
switching versions is irrelevant.
