Why is my Publisher 2007 site now nothing but gibberish?

Saracen

I published it to my hosting account, but after I edited it and tried to
republish it, it's all GIBBERISH. What happened? The hosting account support
people say that something went wacky in Publisher, and they can't help me. I
have no clue how to fix it and would appreciate any help.

Thank you!!

Wow...I have never seen that before. I agree with Rob. Delete the index.htm
file and the index_files folder that Publisher produced from your host, and
upload fresh files. Be careful to not delete any webhost specific files. You
might find the file manager on your host site easiest to use to do this. In
case you did not publish your site correctly to begin with, perhaps
reviewing the following might help.

Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site:

Hi, Rob, thanks for responding!

Yes, every time I save it, it is saved as index.htm.pub. I used Front Page
Extensions this time bc Mad Dog support told me to, and...GIBBERISH!!

I unistallled FTE and still gibberish.

HOW do I delete it off the server? If I remove it from the remote host, it
is still there.

Thank you!

Hi David, thank you for responding.

I tried to publish it with Publisher, too, saving it as an ftp file. No go.

How do I delete the files and what are "webhost specific files"? I can post
the directory if that will help. I tried to publish only the HTML files.
Aaaaahhhh.

There are some confusing things here.
A file called INDEX.HTM.PUB will never work. When you save it YOU must
be carefull that the entry in the file name box is correct as well as
the type in the SAVE AS TYPE box.
If you type INDEX.HTM and the SAVE AS TYPE box says PUB then the result
you got is the way it is.
If you remove the file from the host it IS NOT still there but it maybe
still in the cache on the machine you are browsing with. Do a refresh in
the browser.

I doubt Front Page Extensions has anything to do with this problem.

After reading your response to Rob, and this one several things seem clear.
One is that you did not read the article I linked. Do so and you will
realize that you uploaded a Publisher file, not html files. You do not Save
As to produce your web pages in Pub 2007, you Publish to the Web. Read the
article.

As to deleting the files, log on to your web host using either FTP if you
have it set up, or by logging on to your host control panel and using the
file manager. As you did not produce the index.htm file or the index_files
folder, you aren't looking to delete those....delete the *.pub file you
uploaded. Then produce the web files properly and upload them as per the
instructions on the page I gave you. Alternatively if you aren't using a
form, and are using IE7, then consider downloading and installing FileZilla,
a free ftp program, to upload your files.
http://filezilla-project.org/ It is likely to be easier for you. Take the
time to also download the excellent documentation and read the instructions.

If you are using a form then here are two other links:

Publisher web publication forms 101:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/archive/2006/01/07/80564.aspx

Reference: How to publish a Publisher web in HTTP:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/pages/80557.aspx
and cross reference this material with the instructions in the article I
gave you the first time.

Good luck.

Hi John,

Yes, I kept getting ".pub". Although sometimes it was saved as a "filtered
web page."

I deleted a couple of files from the remote server and then uploaded it
through SmartFTP. It worked!!! I think I accidentally deleted the navigation
links from a couple of pages, though. Oh well. It's up, now I just need to
fix the design. Can I add a flash intro to a Publisher web site?

you can't save anything as ftp, ftp is a protocol not a file extension

as stated earlier in this thread...ftp is a protocol - you can't save a file
as ftp.
