Why is my selected section not deleting when I paste over it?

When I select an object, it usually deletes when I type or paste over it.
But now it is just moves down, so that then I must go in and select the
unwanted object and delete it. What can I do to fix this so that when I
highlight a word or section and type or paste over it, it deletes?

In Tools > Options > Edit, check the box for "Typing replaces selection".
