Why is my text file is not readable

I opened a word file where I use tables. Columns and tables were skewed and
my whole file isn't readable with funny (boxes) characters all over i.e.
garbage. I am using a Word 2000 version and Windows XP operating system.
Please Help!

In the File > Open dialog, make sure the "Files of type" box is *not*
set to "Recover text from any file". See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/RecoverText.htm for more info.
