Why is my typing slow to appear in Word 2007

Hi - I just installed Microsoft Officer 2007 (Student/Home edition) on my new
Sony Vaio laptop (Model VGN-NR37G/S), which has 2GB RAM, 200GB Hard Disk
Drive and a Dual Core processor. My problem is when I use Microsoft Word 2007
my typing is painfully slow to appear on the screen.

I'm not the most computer savvy person in the world and did not uninstall
the trial version of MS Office 2007 before installing it from my purchased
disk (although I have now uninstalled it - but am not sure whether I have
removed ALL of the associated programs).

I have spent quite a while looking on internet advice sites and noticed that
a few other people have had similar problems but could not find a complete
answer solution and talked about reverting to Officer 2003...Is this really
the best solution???

Any help would be much appreciated!! - Am trying to finish my Masters thesis
and am finding my installation of Word to be unusable - frustrating and
stressful!

Thanks,

Nikki, New Zealand

The common reason is a bad graphics driver or a bad printer driver. I
suggest that you check that you have the latest drivers for both. Update the
graphics driver and then delete and reinstall the printer.

Nikki,
You probably resolved this problem by now. I am posting this message for
others who might have this problem in the future.

Based on my search on the Web, it seems that this "slow to appear" problem
can be caused by many different things. Here is a list of solutions I
tried. Each solution seems to work for some and not for other people.
Only one solution worked for me (see below). You will have to try each one
to find the one that works for your computer.

BTW, the problem on my laptop seems to affect all the applications in
MS-office and NOT just MS-word. The slow typing did occur in Excel,
OneNote, Outlook, etc.

- Deactivate or uninstall Thinkvantage Password Manager. This software
comes pre-installed on the Lenovo Thinkpad family of laptop. Mine was a
T61. After trying all the solutions (listed below), only this one fixed my
problem.

- Uninstall and reinstall printer driver, graphic driver. The thought
behind this solution is that those drivers can be corrupted and can slow down
the rendering of the letter.

- Install MS-office07 Service Pack 1. The Service Pack can be found at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...94-992C-4165-A997-25DA01F388F5&displaylang=en

- Uninstall and reinstall MS-outlook and MS-word. The thought here is that
the corrupted MS-Office software is causing the slow typing problem.

- Delete the normal.dot file. This solution seems risky. I tried it and
my MS-word didn't crash afterward. It seems that this file can be corrupted
and causes the slow typing problem. You can find this file by searching
for it using MS File Explorer.

- Deactivate one or more features in MS-word7:

1) Deactivate all the MS-word add-ons. Alt-T, O. Click on Add-ins to see
all the add-ins.

2) Turn off MS-word change tracking. MS-Word07 Review Menu -> TrackChanges
Button. Click to toggle between tracking and not tracking.

3) View document in FINAL form. MS-Word07 Review Menu -> TD. Select FINAL.

4) Turn off MS-word Correct as you Type feature. In MS-Word7: Alt-T, O
-> Proofing, uncheck all checkboxes under WHEN CORRECT SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
IN WORD.

5) Minimize the MS-word ribbon. Right mouse on ribbon, select minimize
ribbon

I saw one other solution out on the web that seems to be too risky and too
exotic to try. And it was about updating the Windows Registry entry for
MS-Office. If all the solution above did not work, you might want to search
on the web for the step by step instruction on how to update the registry.

This "slow typing" problem is eating up a lot of time and causing a lot of
frustration for people out there. I was about to reformat my hard disk and
reinstall everything because of the countless hours I spent on the problem
without any result. I wish Microsoft can provide a patch to fix this
problem for everyone. Either that or improve MS-Office so that MS-office
does not become almost useless just because some applications or some drivers
misbehaved.

Seeing this thread is now almost 3 months old and about to fall off the
server, I think it is all a bit too late.

Some of the ideas are sound, other are not.

â— Uninstalling/Reinstalling rarely does anything except waste time. If in
the unlikely event of a damaged Word file, simply running the REPAIR option
is sufficient.

â— In Office 2007, Outlook is a separate entity to Word, so if both Word
and Outlook type slowly, it points to a problem outside Office.

â— Use Word Safe Mode diagnostics (winword /a), which bypasses all
customisations, add-ins, templates, etc., narrowing down the issue to Word
or a third party problem.

â— We do not recommend deleting normal.dot (or normal.dotm) because you
may lose precious customisations. Instead we recommend rename it as
normal.bad.

â— If you are talking about the registry settings, then it is normal to
delete the Word Data key which is automatically recreated by Word when it
next starts. The only danger is that you accidentally delete the wrong key
and end up stopping Windows booting. The correct procedure is to run
Regedit, navigate to the DATA key, select DATA and press delete.

Word DataKey

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data
