Why is Office 2007 so slow and how to improve speed?

Testing Office 2007 Pro in a work environment running Windows XP Pro,
Exchange 2003, and Windows 2003 std. Any reason why 07 is so much slower 03
and XP? Aside from the "pauses" in Outlook, it's taking extremely long time
whenever we try to save a word or excel file to a network drive.

Any advice on improving the speed is greatly appreciated.

I doubt it's the hardware because my test machine has 4 GB of RAM and
running on a P4 2.4 Ghz processor. I even set aside the max hd space for
virtual memory.
