Why is protection removed from an emailed spreadsheet?

Sending a protected spreadsheet as an attachment, it loses its protection in
transit? It is no longer protected when it arrives.

Mine is still protected.

Did you File, Send To, as 'Mail as Attachent' ?

No. I emailed the spreadsheet using Hotmail. When I used Outlook via your
suggestion, it apparently kept its protection.
