Why is "remove" greyed out for all of my attachments?

This is for removing attachments in Outlook 2003:
My company limits storage space for e-mails. Obviously a lot of this space
is used up by attachments that I always save, but the attachment remains on
the e-mail and takes up that much more space. I recently learned that you can
'remove' an attachment from an e-mail after you've saved it. Someone had
shown me this neat little trick on their computer across the way. When I
attempt to remove ANY attachments (regardless of file type) the option is
ALWAYS greyed out and I cannot remove the attachments... please help. (Thank
you!)

You need to open the message first. You cannot remove an attachment from a
message displayed in the reading pane, because it is read-only in that state.
