Why is the exchange account sending emails instead of POP3 default

We have implemented Exchange in our office primarily just for shared
calendaring. We use a POP3 account as the default email account but
occasionally a message is sent via the exchange account and we don't know
what is triggering this. We have not implented SMTP from the Exchange server
so the message can not be sent via the Exhange account and the user receives
a delay message stating. We don't know what is trigger the use of the
exchange account.s

I don't have an answer, but I just wanted to tack on that we are doing the
exact same thing here and we're having the EXACT same problem. (And I have
found several other answered posts asking the same questions!) At least I
know that I'm not going crazy here.

Thank you as I've been pulling my hair out thinking it was specific to our
implementation of Exchange. Any patterns that you can see as to when it
happens? We have two users who use laptops and they seem to get hit with
this sporadic problem more often than the desktop users.

Hi,
I also have to same problem...on 2 sites..

I was thinking shouldnt it be able to have to exchange server send smtp
mails(cuzz the r the once failing) even if it doesnt have the correct DNS
record configured?

it whould be the same as any pop3 client when sending e-mail both use SMTP
to send..
That whould fix the problem but not exectly what we whant but nevertheless..?

Anyone?

We are having the same problem and I don't know how to fix it, but I know
when it happens and how to get it to send through the POP3 accounts (at least
in our office). It defaults to exchange server whenever you are replying to
or forwarding an e-mail that you originally wrote. In order to fix this when
sending an e-mail, click on the accounts button (right next to the send
button) and select your POP3 account. Hope this at least clarifies what to
do to change it. My question is though, how do you get it to stop defaulting
to Exchange Server?

I also have the same problem. I am using customer's exchnage email and our
company's internal pop3 account.

I also used the same trick of specifying the account when creating new
emails. However, I used to miss many times.

Now, in addition, I have also setup a rule (after sending) to check for the
account and delay for 120 minutes (max allowed) if it is sent by exchange.

This allows me to review the outbox for any stuck messages and change the
account to be used for sending.

However, I would still like to change in the default account to be used. I
want my pop3 account to be used as default.

Any MVPs reading this mail???

When an Exchange account is in a mail profile, it seems to have the habit of
taking over as the default account. Why not configurethe Exchange server to
handle all the messages, even the mail intended right now for the POP
account? Exchange can fetch mail from a POP server and distribute it to the
appropriate mailboxes and can also route SMTP mail to the proper server.

Sure.
