I try to adjust the header on the first page and it affects the
headrers on all the other pages and they all become really big.

Apart from advice on the grammar and coherence of my writing can you
also give advice on this please.

We don't give advice about grammar or coherence. If we can't understand you,
we'll say so, though. You are looking for the setting on the Page Setup
(Layout) dialog to have different headers and footers on the first page.

Take a look at: How to set up letterhead or some other document where you
want one header on the first page and a different header on other pages.
http://www.addbalance.com/word/headersfooters.htm This gives step-by-step
instructions. (It also has the following links)
