What can I do to correct the issue of needing to restart the computer in
order to download emails in Outlook 2003 or send?

With that little bit to go on, its hard to say. Does it ever work? How often
do you have it doing an automatic check?

Sort of hard to go into great detail when limited to 4-10 words to discribe
the problem.

I rarely completely shut down my laptop, just close the lid with Outlook
Inbox still open, when I bring it back from standby, I cannot send or receive
without a complete shutdown and restart. Then I can download new mail.

Automatic is set for five minutes.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you

How are accessing this newsgroup that you are limited to 4 - 10 words?

Have you tried Detect and Repair?
Have you tried taking outlook offline, then bringing it online after 5 min?
Is the network connected?
What type of email account do you have?

Do you need us to call 911 for you because of that thug holding a gun to
your head and forcing you to a limit of 10 words? Be glad it's a really
dumb thug since he didn't notice you actually used a couple dozen words.

Is this at home or work? At work, servers will often disconnect a host
if a connection becomes idle. So what happens when you just exit and
reload Outlook instead of cycling the OS?

To access the discussion group, the sender, me, is asked to describe the
problem in 4 to 10 words. Once the problem has been accessed by the
discussion group, it appears there is not limit to the number of words.

To answer your questions, network is always connected, I am at home , no
server is involved I use a peer to peer network at home some hard wired and
some wireless.

To answer the last part of your question, closing Outlook and re-opening
does not change anything...still must re boot.

How are accessing this newsgroup that you are limited to 4 - 10 words?
The 4-10 words are the limit imposed in stating the problem to submit to
this discussion group. At this point, infinite words are possible

Have you tried Detect and Repair?
No
Have you tried taking outlook offline, then bringing it online after 5 min?
No, good suggestion

Is the network connected?
Yes, always on.

What type of email account do you have?
Pop3

I will try closing Outlook and reopening, going offline and coming back to
it, should do an auto download, as well as detect and repair...thank you

My suspicion is that Outlook is not completely closing. Check with the
Task Manager (Processes tab) if Outlook is still running after closing it.
