The key for your Office installation will be on the case of the installation CD and not on your computer. Is this a Trial version by any chance that came pre-installed on your computer

Just for the sake of argument, let's assume you recently purchased a new computer.

Computer manufacturers often install a trial version of Microsoft Office.
If you are getting a prompt to type in a Product Key when opening a Microsoft
Office program, it is likely the trial period is over and you'll need to purchase a
license (product key) for Microsoft Office.

The product key affixed to your computer is for Windows Vista (the operating system)
and not for Microsoft Office.

Because the product key afixed to the PC is for windows, not office.
If you have a trial version of Office installed you have to purchase the
key, or better still & cheaper order the retail version from eg amazon.com,
not forgetting to uninstall your trial prior to installing your retail
version.
If however you purchased Office with your PC, the key will be amongst the
paperwork.
