Why won't my bitmap update when I've used Insert and Link?

When inserting a bitmap into my Word document, I select Insert and Link,
because I need to distribute to people who don't have access to the source
graphics, but I want to retain the link to the source graphic so I can easily
update the illustrations in my document. This worked in previous versions of
Word, but Word 2003 doesn't seem to support it. Is there another way to
accomplish what I want? I've tried inserting the bitmaps as an object, but
then the file size balloons.

The feature is supported - it just might not be as obviously displayed...
although I thought 2002 did the same.

Insert>Picture>From File, select the image, then click the arrowhead on the
right edge of the Insert button to open the menu & select Insert & Link.

Or are you saying that this is what you *are* doing but it doesn't behave as
expected? If that's the case you'll need to be more descriptive of the
problem and the type of graphic file involved.

Yep, what you describe is exactly what I am doing. When I modify my image in
the source program and press F9 to update (or Update Now in the Links dialog
box), the updated image is not brought into my Word document again. The only
way to get the updated image in is to reinsert it, which kind of defeats the
purpose of linking.

The graphics are standard bitmaps (.bmp). I've also used .png graphics
because they're smaller, but the behavior is the same.

Any ideas?

Hi Lorinda,

Are these graphics set to an 'inline with text' layout style? If not then the 'links' won't appear in or always be updated by
'Edit=>Links'.

Is the problem with any document or just one/several? (i.e. if you start a new document and insert a link and then change the
external graphic and update the field does it 'take'?
