Why won't Office Pro 2003 Update automatically even after detect/.

F

Foster G. Braun

I have run detect/repair on Office 2003 Pro and I still get an error that
prevents me from scanning automatically to find updates that I need. Any
solutions?

What's the exact error message?

Office Update is unable to check for updates Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This
may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information
see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if
Unavailable.

I am also getting the error. It iappears to be a bug in Office 2003, but
none of the technical bulletins I find give me any idea what to do about it.
How irritating! Will we need to buy a new version, just to fix the bug in
our current version?

Good Job!!!
I tried the Win Installer Utility, removed Office XP components, and now I
can get Office 2003 updates. Thank you for the advice.

Now if I could only get these 2 Windows updates to install:
..NET framework 1.1 & my nVidia update. These are the only two that fail?

I tried running the windows cleanup program referenced here. It ran
successfully but didn't solve the problem. Did you have to un-install
outlook, word etc.? If I uninstall Outlook will I lose all my Data?

I too have this problem, although with Office Standard 2003. I did a full
clean install on top of Office XP, but cannot get updates. Same message as
referenced below - "Office Update is unable to check for updates". I have
run the suggested cleanup program without success. Ideas?

I just spent 3 1/2 hours on the phone with Microsoft office tech support who
assures me that I am the only one that has this problem. Unfortunately, they
don't know how to resolve it either. Supposedly, someone from the
engineering is going to call me on Friday to work with me to resolve this
issue.

the office update worked fine for me [up til last month when i last checked]
but now i get this error all the time too.

In the interim i updated my AV - though i cant see why this would cause a
problem especially as Windows updates correctly.

Just had a problem with office that required me using the MSI clean up
tool to remove office 2003 and then I reinstalled 2003 and now I get the
error "Office Update is unable to check for updates" also!

Thanks

My problem is that Office XP wont update because they say that I require the
'administrator version' and that previous updates were done via an
administrator. What does all that mean? thanks for any help

I too tried the clean up utility without success. I also tried removing
Plus! and ran the utility again. I can't even uninstall Office due to this
missing Installer patch files. I'm anxiously awaiting Microsoft's fix.

i also tried uninstalling office 2003 and re-installing and still have the
same problem.

Well I have been working with M$ products for over 15 years. This is just
another product M$ pushes on the public (by retiring older software that
FINALLY WORKS HALF ASS), that has not been fully regression tested. When
problems arise, they don't FULLY support their products and like all the
great companies, CHARGE US to get help TO FIX THEIR PRODUCTS! They will fix
this in their next SP which will have more bugs. WELCOME TO M$'$ WORLD.

Just me two cents after 15 years of this.

Thanks for the suggestion but it doesn't work for me. I still can't access
the updates. Any other ideas? Anybody?

It did work for me (using Office Pro 2000) after I more carefully read the
instructions on KB295823

I have the same problem. Microsoft has a problem here. I understand they
think it only exsists on your computer, but they probably don't want to scare
people out of buying their product.
