Why won't security updates install

Everytime my computer downloads the latest updates they do not install
successfully. What can I do to change this.

What operating system? Windows XP pro or Windows XP home or Windows
2000 or ?Do you get any error messages? Anything in event viewer? To
get to event viewer click on the start button, Select RUN, type
eventvwr.exe and click OK. Check the application and system logs for
errors.
