Why won't Word (2000) recognise my GIF file but Paint will?

I have some GIF giles generated via a basic script. Paint, photoshop and
other graphics programs recognise them fine. However if I insert into Word
2000 they insert as a white empty square box. Word in XP doesn't have this
problem. Is there an update or filter I need to upload to fix this?

Do you have "Picture placeholders" checked on the View tab of Tools |
Options?
