Why won't Word show proper 8.5x11 letter size page in 'view'?

I'm trying to look at a whole page view and the page that appears is a
squashed version of a letter sized page. Why does this happen and how can I
stop it?

Are you in Print Layout view or Print Preview? If the former, see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/WhiteSpace.htm. If the latter, do you
have Track Changes on, or does the document contain comments?

I'm having this trouble too.. in Word 2000... (on XP on a P4 2.4ghz
machine with 450 megs of RAM)...

my page size is set to 8.5 x 11, in protrait orintation
my margins are set to 1 inch all round

in normal view everything is shoved against the left side of the page,
and in print layout view the ruler only shows a 7.5 inch wide page and
..5 inch margins on each side, and in print preview, the page looks long
and thin like a legal size page.. but its just because the display is
missing .5 inch of white space on each side of the page.. the
documents actually print out ok because it does centre them properly on
the page with the text starting an 1 inch instead of .5 inch.. but it
looks so weird.. and it makes me feel uncomfortable because it doesn't
look like what I'm expecting.. so It makes me nervous about whether it
is going to print correctly...
