Why would cut and paste not be working?

I am a novice Word user and have never had this happen before. All of a
sudden when I highlight a word, sentence or whatever and copy and attempt to
paste it, the pasting is not occuring. Any ideas? I am a keyboard user so I
typically type Alt-e for the Edit menu, C for copy and so and so forth. But
I tried the buttons too and nothing.

I suggest that you forget the Alt. Ctrl+A will select all.
Ctrl+C will copy to the clipboard. Ctrl+V will paste.
