Why would you set a "message expires after xxx days" option?

Occasionally I get a message that later expires. It gets a line through it,
but is readable. So what's the point? Why would you want a message to expire
after a certain time (set in the advanced options) if nothing really happens
to it when you do? What is the user trying to achieve by this?

You still have the message because you've read it. IIRC, an unread copy of
the message should be deleted from the server. That way, when Bob returns
from his two week vacation, he doesn't have to see a ton of 'Anyone want a
ride to lunch' and 'I brought in donuts!' mails (unless, of course, he kept
outlook running and moves his mails to a pst).

Indicating that the message no longer applies after a certain date.
AutoArchive can be set to automatically delete expired items to clean up
your mailbox.
