Whyizzit?? Spell checker

Using Microsoft Office 2000 on a server. If I start typing a document, I
can see the red underlined misspellings and correct them. But if I open a
saved document I created earlier or was created by someone else, I can't
spell-check it. Is this normal? Is there a workaround? A patch? Would
Office XP work better?

Now I can go into tools and see that it is set up to underline misspelled
words, but it ain't doing it!!

Documents created in versions earlier than Word 97 (which was the first
version to incorporate "Check spelling as you type") automatically have
"Hide spelling errors in this document" checked on the Spelling & Grammar
tab of Tools | Options. This is also true of templates created in earlier
versions, so all documents based on this template will also have spelling
errors hidden. This is a document-specific setting and can be toggled
without opening the Options dialog by right-clicking on the Spelling and
Grammar Status icon on the status bar.

Hiding spelling errors doesn't prevent the spelling checker from working,
though. If you can't check spelling even by running the spelling checker
explicitly, then the language of the document is set to "Do not check
spelling and grammar." Ctrl+A to select the entire document, then go to
Tools | Language | Set Language and clear that check box.
