Wi-Fi and Slow Opening Office Files

D

Dave

Both MS Word and Excel apparently operate fine except
when I'm connected to Wi-Fi. The problem is that then it
takes about a minute and a half to open a file. I don't
know what it's doing with Wi-Fi connections that it
doesn't otherwise do, but I wish it wouldn't do whatever
it is. Ninety seconds is much too long a wait to load an
almost empty DOC file :(

What can I do to stop this little irritation???

Thanks for any help

Dave

If the attached template is or was on the network, Word will spend a lot
more time looking for it if you are connected than when you are not (it
doesn't take as long to search your HD and give up as it does to search the
network). If the attached template has been deleted or moved, then try
attaching Normal.dot and see if that doesn't speed things up.

D

Dave

Normal.dot was already attached, and it is slow anyway.
(!!RATS!!) Are there any settings I can make to keep this
software from (apparently by design) drifting off into
the stratosphere looking willy-nilly for who knows what?
I happen to know where my files are, and if I need MS
Word to do any searching, I want to tell it when to
search and what to search for. Is this the way that it
is, so therefore, when I'm on Wi-Fi I'm stuck?

Help, help, help!!!
Thanks,

Dave

I suggest that you check the quality of your WiFi link. Select a largish
file (say 1MB) on the server and copy it to a folder on your Notebook and
see how long it takes to copy. Then do the same test using the standard
network connection. The WiFi connection should be no more than 4 times as
long (assuming that you have the latest 802.11g WiFi). (Not a scientific
test, but if it is as slow as you state, the test should confirm a problem.)

Assuming that test is OK, using WiFi, make sure that you have full access to
the server folders that have the documents and templates stored.

Finally, make sure that you have a local printer driver installed and set as
Windows Default when in WiFi mode.

This computer is a stand-alone, and is frequently, but
not always, connected to some kind of internet access.
Sometimes the access is dial-up, and at my current
location the access to the internet is Wi-Fi. I am not
really a part of any particular network. I have used
Linkspot, Flying-J, and T-Mobile Wi-Fi connections
depending upon where I'm located. Does MS Word "think"
I'm using those as a server?

I'd like to keep MS Word on a leash and confine its
activity to my local hard drive. Its useless forays into
the ethereal reaches of the internet not only take up too
much time, but make me quite nervous. There's no reason
for MS Word to be looking, searching, sniffing (or
whatever else it does) anywhere except my hard drive,
even when I might be connected to internet access. I want
to control the software and not have the software control
me.

(I'm starting to miss my old WordStar 5.5)

Thanks,

Dave

Ah WordStar! The days when a wordprocessor new its limitations and where
Desktop Publishing took over! (I was a real fan of WordStar 6.)

Word will access the Internet (or try to) to check for all sorts of
information and also send Microsoft information about how you are using Word
(Office). Some of these options can be changed in Help, Customer Feedback
Options. Also, if Help is set to check on line before off line, it too will
try to establish if and Internet link is available. I have also Identified
that Intellipoint randomly connects to check for updates and that coincides
with an Office application starting and establishing a connection.

Also the point I made about the printer: you must ensure that you have
installed a local printer and set it as the Windows Default - otherwise Word
will spend its life looking for a printer somewhere else.

I have unchecked a number of items that looked like they
were even THINKING of looking to the internet. The first
item was that "Customer Feedback" thing, which wasn't
immediately going to solve any of my problems with MS
Word. Besides, I'm not sure they really want to hear what
kind of "feedback" I'd be giving them right now. If I
could just get the program to stop doing a virus scan on
my own DOC files, maybe this process could speed up a bit.

I do have a local default printer all hooked up with a
good driver and everything. There's no need for me at
this time to even be thinking about printing on some
remote printer. The local printer is "it," and there's no
other printer installed here. The program is spending its
life looking for something besides the printer.

I also miss the little animated "HELP" dog that was on
earlier versions of MS Office products.

I've never understood the nostalgia for WordStar. I used it for a lot of
years and don't miss it one bit. One of the things I recall as particularly
clunky was its approach to word wrap. If you deleted words from a line, the
text on subsequent lines didn't backfill until you cursored through the
paragraph.

Fond memories don't mean we want it back! I actually have a copy of Wordstar
7 on my machine, though I couldn't tell you either when I last ran it or why
I still keep it - nostalgia must be the explanation.

If there is one Word processor that should have been developed it was Ami
Pro - and I don't mean to the dreadful Word Pro. All it needed was bringing
up to date to suit 32 bit operating systems.

Yes, although I never used Ami Pro, I read enough about it to understand why
users might regret its passing. The last version of WordStar I had was a
misbegotten Windows version. There's an interesting Web site that details
the checquered history of WordStar. I have a printout of it around here
somewhere, but I can't lay my hands on it at the moment so wouldn't be able
to give you the URL except that Google is my friend, and it was the first
hit: http://www.wordstar.org/wordstar/history/history.htm

If you are using Norton AV, turn off the Office Plug-in in the advanced
options section of NAV.

Cursoring through wasn't necessary. A quick CTRL B(??)
would zip you right to the end of the paragraph
backfilling and formating in the process. If I still had
my Kaypro, I think my fingers would remember the exact
combo, even if my brain didn't. Never gave a lot of that
stuff a passing thought since it was light years ahead of
my Underwood. I do recall though that using the WS menu
and the arrow keys could be brutal, so I stuck to the
CTRL keys for everything. Those WS commands became a de
facto standard for a lot of the little utility editors
that came out around that time.

Folks, I think I have a handle on this thing now, thanks
to you. The last piece of the puzzle was the unchecking
the Office plug-in box in Norton Anti-Virus. With that
and all the other unchecking, the file loading time has
gone from 1 1/2 minutes to about 7 seconds. That isn't
lightning fast with today's systems, but it's something I
can live with. Thanks to all.

That article is a mine of useless information ;)
I ran WS from versions 4-7, which I felt (and still do) that it surpassed
all the alternative DOS word processors. Did you ever try IBM's unutterably
dreadful DisplayWrite? ... Ughhhh! Then came the appalling Windows effort
after which Wordstar deserved to die. Let us not mourn its passing.

Graham,
I did, even had to teach it to others unfortunately. On a PC you could do
something with it but on a mini computer (System 36/38 they cere called it
was total disaster. While on the subject of old word processors, did you
ever use MultiMate, learned and forgotten this one too.
Luc

S

Suzanne S. Barnhill

Somebody gave me a copy of MultiMate, but I never actually used it. My first
experience with WordPerfect was a nonstarter, too, as it was a "borrowed"
copy with no documentation and, being used to WordStar's menus, I had no
idea what to do with WP's completely empty screen!
