Wide graphics in two column format in XP

I was having trouble with this in O97, then just got upgraded to OXP, so I'm
further back on the learning curve than I need to be....

I will be putting together a long (50 page) document in 2 column format, but
will need to insert images at different places that will be wider than the
width of a column. Basically, I'll want to be able to place them wherever
they need to be on the page, and not have them move when the text moves.

Is there a preferred way to accomplish this? when I put them in now and
resize them to desired width, anything past the edge of column 1 isn't
viewable...

this document will be the collaborative effort of multiple people, so the
simpler the solution the better. If necessary, I'd be willing to look at
automating a good solution with VBA, if it wasn't too complex.

It seems that most simple operations limit the size (width) of the inserted
pictures, but once I put in a few text boxes I can see the pictures if they
overlap, and some pictures now show full size even if they don't overlap a
text box? I'm confused about what the critical behavior is that allows these
pictures to span columns.

Any advice appreciated!

You'll need to have the graphics "floating." In Word 97, when you first
insert them, there is a check box (checked by default) for "Float over
text." If the graphics have been inserted inline, you can go to Format
Picture and, on the Position tab, check the box for "Float over text."
You'll then be able to move the graphic freely and make it span columns.

In Word 2002, graphics are by default inserted In Line with Text (and you
have no option to insert them floating or "wrapped"). After insertion, click
on the graphic to display the Picture toolbar, then click the Text Wrapping
button (dog icon) to display the wrapping menu and choose any style other
than In Line with Text. When you have figured out which wrapping style works
best for you, you can make this the default by selecting it on the Edit tab
of Tools | Options.
