I've just upgraded office 2000 to 2003 and Win ME to Win XP at the same time
by erasing the hard drive. Therefore I did these 2 things which you may not
need to do but won't harm to make sure:

To back up office settings (word etc) use the files & settings transfer
wizard. In Xp it is at:
Start - Programs - Accessories - System tools.
Tell it this is the old computer then once installed run again saying it is
the new computer. Make sure you don't save the backup to somewhere you are
going to overwrite!

To backup emails & contacts etc from within Outlook:
File - Import and Export. Then export to a file. Repeat with the new
version but use import from a file.

Don't use export to backup. Just copy the original pst-file and then later
connect to it on th enew client by File-> Open-> Outlook Data File... With
an export you'll loose settings like custom views and forms and the modified
date of the items.

You shouldn't but making a backup of your pst-file before starting the
process never hurts. All settings that are compatible between te versions
will be migrated automatically.
