Will my nav bar still work?

P

pjandora

I am creating my web pages locally on my laptop in frontpage. I noticed that
it creates a My Web Pages(globe icon on the folder) folder and stores all the
files there. I have actually tried to create a web page in a non web folder
and the page would not let me create a Navigation Bar. I just did this to
check.

I am zipping a my web folder up locally and sending it to the person who is
suppose to serve up the pages. FrontPage is not loaded on the server. I
noticed my Navigation Bar did not show up. I believe they are using a
non-micrsoft web server. The guy mentioned that the FrontPage extensions
were on. My friend loaded it up on his local web server which is IIS and it
worked fine.

1. Does the folder need to be a web folder for the navigation bar to work
because even though I zip it as a Web folder whent the person extracts it is
a normal folder?
2. Will the navigation bar functionality still work with the process I am
using to server up my pages?

Thanks,
Phil

If you are creating the website using Front Page and the
host server uses Front Page Extensions, why are you
having someone else "serve up the pages"? You could
SIMPLY (emphasis intended) publish (see Front Page help)
your site from your computer. This assumes you have a ISP
connection, i.e. a connection to the internet.

My guess is the person serving up your pages is using FTP
to do so. This requires some knowledge of what specific
files need to be FTPed to the host. My guess is that this
person isn't aware of the navigation files. An additional
point: using an FTP program to transfer files to a host
account where Front Page Extensions are present
will "brake" those extensions. You will then lose any
functionality provided by those extensions (form
processing, etc.)

Rick thanks for your reply. I am sort of illiterate when it comes to the
server side of things. I am basically creating my html documents and just
saving them. I then zip that folder and send to them as I don't know really
what to do (I don't publish locally to a new folder and send that, but should
I? I don't know what this does.) I am sure I could figure it out but for
now I would prefer not.

So they are going to serve up the pages. What do we need to do so the nav
bar works? I give them the zip file and they extract to the server then
they try and publish to their web server. How do they have to publish this?

Thanks,
Phil

Web components that require the FP server extensions must be http published
to the host server.

You must have a web open on your local machine before you work on pages.

Zipping up the web pages and sending to them will not allow the web to
function properly.

You should be publishing your web from your local pc to the host server that
has the extensions installed.

Tom thanks for the reply.
So I do this right?
1. Click the Publish Site in the File menu
2. Select Frontpage or Sharepoint option
3. enter my website of www.dscontainers.com since that is site.
4. Enter username/password (I need to get this)
5. Note sure what I need to do next???

Are these the correct steps and if so what do I do after the password is
entered.

Thanks,
Phil

File | Publish Web (or site)
put in the web address http://www.discontainers.com
Enter the username/password issued by the host
Click OK
Unless you are using FP 2003, then some different commands may come up.

Thanks I will try this. So there is no service running on the web server
that has to be stopped in order to load the new pages.

Don't I also need the Select Frontpage or Sharepoint option in order for my
nav bar to work properly. I think I read somewhere that FTP won't work
correctly, right?

I looked at the help menu and for the Select Frontpage or Sharepoint option
I need the servername/directory not the website is this correct?

Tom,
I really appreciate your assistance with this. So from what I read this
looks pretty simple. Almost too simple to be true. Are you aware of any
other problems I may encounter by doing this?

I am just curious. So when I enter the URL and password it will take me to
the screen to move the files over to the Web Server. How did it locate the
directory to publish the files to on the web server just by typing the URL?
It can find its exact location apparentley.

Thanks,
Phil
