Win users can't open my files?

I keep saving docs and sending them to users on Win machines and they are
unable to open the files and receive a message that they need to install
some converter. Is there something that I can do on my end to make sure they
can open the files?

Which version of Word do you use? On which operating system? And what
mailer do you use?
