Window placement skewed

J

JVS

When my Word 2003 window is maximized, it drops the
window half way down my screen and I lose the bottom half
of the window. When I minimize it, it pops to the top of
the screen. The only way I can view a window the size of
my screen is to resize the minimized window.

You might try recreating the Word/Data key in the Registry. This key
stores the application window/size.

Exit Word and in the Registry navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Data

and rename the Data key. Word will create a new one upon starting.

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should
review "Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the
Registry Help.

In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry
file command, export your selected branch, and delete the key. That
way if you find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can
merge the deleted branch back to the Registry by double-clicking the
resulting file.

I have much the same problem with Word 2003, but when I
looked in the registry for the key mentioned, I couldn't
find it. Any other ideas?

Thanks! Pauline

Hi Pauline,

You might try looking again or searching for the Data key. Word stores
most of your personal preferences such as those found under
Tools/Options so it should be there.

Thanks, Beth. Interestingly, when I looked again the
Data key was there, and I deleted it and all was well.
For awhile.

Word initially opened up with the maximized window
positioned properly, then sometime later I used it a 2nd
time and the window was mis-positioned again -- slightly
down from the top of the screen, slightly to the left.

I can fix the problem temporarily by deleting that Data
key (which now is showing up reliably!), but it seems to
reoccur. I'm now experimenting with turning off the use
of Word as my email editor to see it that somehow affects
the window positioning problem.

Thanks for your help. I'll post here again if I have any
new insights.

Well, the jury is IN. This problem of Word misplacing
its maximized window seems to occur only if I am using
Word as my email editor in Outlook. Don't understand it,
but there it is.

Hi Pauline,

I've heard similar complaints about using Word as the email editor and
it resetting user preferences. Let's hope this issue is rectified
soon!
