Windows 2000- No longer stands alone?

Five years ago I bought Windows 2000 as a separate program and have used it
with three versions of my OS, never installing Office. Now I'd like to know
if I can update it. MS Support pages don't show a self-standing Word program
that is even available as an upgrade. Windows 2003, it seems, comes bundled
with Office.

Does that mean I'll be obliged to buy Office if I want a later version of
Word than my 2000?

by Windows 2000 you mean Word 2000? ... if so check out

with past versions it was often cheaper to buy word bundled with works than
on its own .. so it might pay you to look around a bit

and, you might want to check out the system specificiations before
purchasing it.

No, you can still purchase Word separately, though it is disproportionately
expensive. By far the cheapest way to get it is as part of Works Suite 2005,
which includes Word 2002 (see
http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=001); the
$20 rebate currently in effect gets the street price down to less than $70.
But you will have to buy Office or Word if you want the 2003 version.
