There's no particular reason why you can't open .xlsm files in Excel
2008. In fact, Excel 2008 ought to be able to open (but not run the
macros contained within) ordinary .xlsm files.

Does Excel provide any sort of message when you try to open .xlsm files?
If so, what does the message ssy?

Thank you for your reply.

There is a message that Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. And Excel closes.

I have found that .xlsx files open with no problem, so I had assumed that the problem lie with the .xlsm format, but I am no expert on these issues.

Hi David, this messenge means Excel crashes when trying to open this file. Can you please send me ([email protected]) this workbook? I will help recover it.

I am encountering the same problem as this person described with an xlsm file. I get a message that states: Excel cannot open this file. The file might have been damaged or modified from its original format.

I can open the file on Excel 2007 in Windows 7 so I know that the file is not corrupted. I have been having this problem with other xlsm over the past three months. I don't know if Microsoft make an update that created this incompatibility. I had my client save the file using compatibility checker as recommended by a Mac Tech in Puerto Rico, but I still cannot open the file.

Any light you can shed would be very helpful. The file was created by my client on Office 2007 and I am trying to open it on a Mac Office 2008.

Thank you for your help.
