Windows authentication login problem--linked to McAfee--please help

We just did a reinstall of Project Server and Windows Sharepoint
Services on a single box using Windows Authentication. Problem is,
when Project Pro 2003 is launched and you are first prompted for your
login account on the pick list, here's what happens.

1. I select the login account and hit the connect button
2. Project Pro HANGS until I click the Cancel button
3. Project Pro is STILL running and the login account picklist is
still there
4. I select the same login account and click on the connect button and
it works!

This is consistent time after time after time on the desktop client.
You connect once, it hangs, you cancel, try again and it works. This
does NOT happen with the PWA piece. If you shut down Project Pro 2003
and start over, it does it all over again.

A colleague of mine over at another organization says they have run
into the same problem but on different machines.

Now, what we have found is that it is related to McAfee Virus
Protection. Our Tech Services people have tested this and when McAfee
is uninstalled from the machine, then the connect works the first time.
It makes sense since the other folks I talked about are having it
happen on some machines and not others.

Does anyone else out there know about this and whether or not there is
a bit we can "flip" in McAfee or elsewhere on the desktop that will
remove this problem -- without having to uninstall McAfee Virus
Protection?

Behaviour is caused by scriptscan function of McAfee virus scan 8.0,
however disabling the option does not resolve the problem. To resolve
the problem you need to unregister the scriptproxy.dll file of McAfee.
I believe there is a KB article 890736 on similar problem

Mike,

Is there a similar problem with Norton AntiVirus? A colleague of mine
in another organization is having the same problem but they use Norton
AntiVirus.

Is there a new version of McAfee that will alleviate the problem? Is
McAfee and/or Microsoft aware of the problem? Are there patches from
either company that solves the problem?

The article you mention states that the unregistration thing might open
up your machine to more attacks from the outside. Is there a true
danger in doing that?

Thanks,
Andy

Andy:

I think you should contact McAfee support to see if they've issued updates.

Here is a response I received back from McAfee:
I wanted to touch base with you as Microsoft has gotten back to me in
regards to the VirusScan and Project Server 2003 issue. Microsoft has
confirmed the issue is with Project Server and created a hotfix to
address the issue. In order to obtain the hotfix, you will need to
contact Microsoft and request the hotfix be sent to you. You will need
to reference KB 899341 to received the hotfix. The article is
currently not public but one should be posted in the near future.

I have not tested the hotfix so I do not know if it works or not.

Hope that helps,

Victor

I e-mailed Microsoft about the reference number and they said there's
no hotfix associated with that number. Are you sure you typed in the
correct number or did McAfee give you the wrong one?

Sryngz:

I'm not certain that the hotfix Victor is referencing is fully published
(available for general distribution) although it is a correct number. He
might have gotten it through premium support. You might have to push up a
level or two on the call with Microsoft.

That was the number given to me. I had been working with McAfee for
awhile and Microsoft finally came out with a hotfix. I have not tried
to obtain the hotfix from Microsoft, but I would agree with Gary that
you probably need to push up a level or two within Microsoft.

Thanks,

Victor

Victor:

It is a valid hotfix number, it also happens to be the latest, and likely
the last to be released until SP2.

Is the hotfix for the desktop client or project server?

well, I've called and talked to several people in Microsoft about the
article number and everyone of them say there is no article KB 899341.
I asked them if I were to get premium support if it would be available
and they assured me this article number is no where to be found whether
I had premium support or not. So I guess the only solution right now
is to unregister scriptproxy.dll or to just live with the double login.
Thanks

Michael
