Windows hangs when editing text in Visio

Hello,
I currently have a problem with Visio hanging Windows when I try to
edit text. I can insert text in the text box when it's created, but if
double-click on the box to edit the text the whole system hangs. I doubt
this is a common problem because googling has turned up nothing. But has
anyone got a clue what might be the problem. In the application log I have
several warnings regarding MsiInstaller,

EventID: 1015

Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x800401F0

but I suspect I have some of these predating the current problem. I did
recently rename the computer, network it to another PC and install VNC.
Also, a little while ago I had problems pasting Visio diagrams into Word
(fixed by deleting temporary files), and prior to that a problem with my AV
software (AVAST4) causing Windows to hang on booting (so I just uninstalled
it). Maybe this gives someone a clue to a common cause? I have uninstalled
and reinstalled Visio to no effect. I have Visio Professional 2002 SR-1
(10.0.2514), Word 2002 (10.2627.3501) SP-1 running on Windows 2000 Pro
Version 5.0 (Build 2195: SP2). Cheers.

This is a long-shot. Did you see this on a particularly large text block? Unfortunately, the performance on background spell-checking is poor in Visio 2002. (It's much better in Visio 2003.

At any rate, I have seen this reported as a hang because it takes so long for Visio to respond (which is as bad as a hang, right?). I don't recall this ever appearing to hang Windows, though... However, for the sake of ruling this out, try turning off background spell-checking in Tools | Options | Spelling. (Un-check the "Check spelling as you type" box.
