Windows Server

Why is signing up with a company that offers Windows Servers decidedly more
expensive than a Linux or others It costs about twice as much for 1/2 the
space. Is it the ASP or what that makes it cost more?

It depend on the hosting service, in general Unix/Linux OS are free and Windows is not.

That depends on the host. You'll need to find hosts that use Windows and
ask them.

It's not so much the cost of a windows server program, it's the cost of the equipment that will run
it.
Servers can cost several thousand dollars each.

This takes us back to my question. I would have to assume that it also costs
several thousands of dollars for the linux server equipment. Something is
driving up the cost of hosting on a Windows Server and the only thing that
jumps right out at me is Microsoft. How much is the cost of the Windows
Server Progarm that will run on the Windows Server? Does anyone know?

Windows server 2003 can be $1,199 to $3,999 depending upon the version and it's capabilities.

But the real point is exactly what Tom Pepper Willett posted earlier, and that is that a lot of UNIX
programs that people run on Apache servers are "open source" aka "Free."

Thanks for all of the information. One more question and I will call it a
day. What is the advantage of using a Windows Server over an Apache Server?

S

Depends on what you want to do with your web site.
You can't run Access or Microsoft SQL on and Apache/UNIX server., but anything that requires
FrontPage extensions will run ( if the host supports it ) because RTR software creates and gives
away a UNIX version of the extensions.

My hobby site http://www.95isalive.com/ runs on an Apache / UNIX server with RTR extensions.

Thanks again Steve. I learned a lot today.

If you want to use MS Technologies, then you want a Windows Server, else use Unix/Linux.

BTW: You can get Windows hosting for as little as $8.95/month

This is a disscussion that has gone very wrong!
The first problem is to find a server that can host FP 2003 to it´s full
extent.
The second problem is to find an affordable server.
In essence, it´s a typical MS marketing gimmic: MS has abandoned "Server
Extensions". They do not say, that they have created new Server extensions in
the form of a new Server family. Oh No!
Their Marketing stategy is something I recognize from the seventies, and
it´s outdated!
We, the users, have no problem to see through the Microsoft "lies".
But Microsoft wants to impress less knowledgeable people than their users,
notably
the buyers. This outdated marketing strategy will cease within ten years, as
buyers will have better knowledge

FP2003 supports everything that FP2000/2002 supported via the FP2002 extensions.

If you want to use FP and all of the available MS technologies supported by FP, then you will need
to be hosted on a Windows 2003 server with SharePoint Services installed.

If you just want to use all of the available features of the FP2002 extensions, then you will need
to be hosted on a Windows 2000 or 2003 server running the FP2002 extensions. There just a few
features of the FP extensions that are not supported on Unix/Linux host, like file upload.
