Windows XP Address Book

C

Craig

I've been sending faxes for some time now with no trouble from my MS
Outlook 2000 address book. This morning, I went to send a fax and
when I clicked on 'Address Book', up popped the MS Outlook Express
address book?????????????

I want to use the MS Outlook 2000 address book. How do I get Windows
XP fax to revert to the Outlook address book. FYI, the MS Outlook
2000 address book comes up fine under 'Contacts' in MS Outlook 2000.

Thanks.

How have you configured the Windows Address Book then? Does it share with
Outlook or does it use its own separate WAB file? (Open the Windows Address
Book and look in Tools > Options if you don't know).
Windows XP Fax should always use the Outlook Address Book by default
whenever Outlook is installed. But with an IMO installation, all bets are
off. These two programs are so far apart in versions that I've never seen an
IMO installation with Windows XP Fax.

Russ, can you explain your last sentence a bit more?

I'm wondering what other problems I could be expecting since I have one
IMO installation and xp Fax has been working fine with it.

Since IMO could not support the Outlook Address Book Service, I cannot
speculate how XP Fax will set up its address book service. I strongly doubt
that Windows XP Fax was designed with IMO in mind since IMO was abandoned so
long ago.
The Fax Service should work fine as long as it can use an older modem. I
just have no idea how address book integration will work. What do you see?

P

PHiL M.

I actually see all entries in my Contacts folder when I click the
Address Book button in the xp fax wizard. I can select entries that I
want to fax my documents to, and if an entry has no fax number stored,
the fax wizard would refuse to let me add the entry to the recipient's
list - with an error message saying it doesn't contain a valid fax
number (or something to that effect).

I also looked at my Contacts folder's Properties and there is a Outlook
Address Book tab - the option to use this folder as an address book is
ticked, but greyed out. I can add a new Contacts folder and the same
option under the OAB tab is available for me to tick or untick.

FYI : I have all the Office 2000 updates and patches installed, and it
was a 100% clean installation from Oct 2002 using a retail XP Home
Edition Upgrade, including the Outlook.pst file it is using now, and I
didn't switch from CW config. I only have this computer running on
Office 2000, and the other computer came with Office xp so I can't
really say if this is a one-off.

That's the way it should work, because all the predecessors of XP Fax worked
that way. It continues to use the Windows address Book (because the Windows
Address Book is what IMO uses), but since the Windows Address Book is linked
to your Outlook Contacts Folder, those are the entries you'll see.

Thanks Russ. In other words, IMO doesn't really have OAB? So why is
there a OAB tab in Contacts or any other Contacts folders? Is it for
linking to WAB? I'm still confused :(

One more thing. By saying "Windows Address Book is linked to Outlook
Contacts Folder" I presume you are not referring to the option to allow
WAB to use the data in Contacts, correct? My computer isn't using the
option since my mom uses OE for her email and WAB opens to a separate
address book for her.

IMO does not contain the MAPI transports necessary to support the Outlook
