Windows XP and Excel 97

We still use Excel 97 here. My boss has it on his Windows
XP Professional machine. It always worked fine until he
installed SP2 for XP. That fouled up his phone software so
he had to remove that service pack. Now excel won't work
and I'm at a loss for what to try. I have uninstalled,
blown the registry away best that I can and reinstalled
Excel. I have applied all the patches and SR's to Excel. I
can open Excel but upon doing any kind of formatting or
changing the font etc, I get an error that says Excel has
to close. When I click on the link it says; AppName:
Excel.exe, AppVer: 8.0.1.9904, ModName: mso97.dll, ModVer:
8.0.0.4202, Offset: 00045766.
Has anyone had a similar situation? Any suggestions what I
can try?
