Windows XP - Computer Locked

HELP!!!!

After Windows boots up, none of my icons appear. I go
into task manager, and I noticed my computer is locked. I
try to unlock, but nothing.

I took my computer in and they said, I will have to
reformat my computer and reinstall, however, I will lose
everything.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
