Windows XP & Office 2000

Hi,
I'm unable to open Excel file from a web-based email (ie. MSNHotmail.com).
When I tried to open directly (without downloading it first to local disk),
I will get error message:
" 'C:\Documents and Settings\...\Content.IE5\OI2OHJ9D\FileName.xls' could
not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file
location is correct."
This error will not appear if I save the file to my local disk, before
opening it.
I tried to fix it by changing the setting: Tools-Options-General- click
Ignore other applications. If I do this and try to open the file, MS Excel
will open without opening any worksheet (empty Excel/grey screen).
Funny thing is that I don't have this problem if I open the file using
Windows 98 as O/S. The file will open successfully. Both of the OS (XP and
Win98) use Office 2000 and IE6.

Pls. help. Thanks.

The path specified above is where the web page (Hotmail) will be downloaded
to prior to you reading it so if the path to the excel file is relative to
the email message then it will try to find the xls file in the temp internet
folders.

The reason you can't open it is because the email (web page) you are reading
is in your temp internet files and the xls file is still located on the
server. You have to click the link, hotmail will then virus scan it and
offer you the chance to access the excel file.

Maybe this'll help:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

I did that. Sorry for not giving the detail steps.
When I clicked the link, Hotmail checked the file for viruses. Next step I
clicked the menu "Download File". After that, IE would ask whether I wanted
to "Open" or "Save" the attachment. "Save" and open it later worked fine,
but not if I choose "Open".
I have a thought that this is a problem with Windows XP and Excel 2000. It's
because on every computer I try I will end up with the same problem. Is
there anybody else having the same problem?
