Computer is turned on, walpaper loads up and computer appears to be frozen
for a few minutes before the desktop and pointer appear on the screen.
Computer is a laptop, Toshiba Tecra A2, plenty of memory. Have checked for
viruses etc. computer is clean. - annoying having to wait for 3-4 minutes
for startOtherwise computer is running fine. Anyone have advice on what is
going on and how to fix it?

This issue has nothing to do with Office . You should repost this issue to the Windows XP Group.

Meanwhile see what is in your Start Up folder in MSConfig Startup and uncheck all that is not necessary

Take the link below and copy\paste it into your Browsers Address bar to access the Windows XP group.
