windows xp with Office 97

When double clicking on a .doc file from windows explorer,
the document opens with a message something like:
"This file is already being used by DAN. Do you want to
make a copy?"

The file opens without incident from word.

I am using Windows XP and Office 97.

Try reregistering Word by using Start, Run and typing in

winword /r

and press enter. That will register Word in Windows again.
