WindowsXP and Word2000 Crash

Dear all,

I have posted a few times regarding this issue and have tried various
"fixes" but nothing seems to work.
We have a PC running Windows XP (SP1a), Office 2000 (latest SP), Novell
Client 4.83 (SP1) and Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (v8.1).

Whenever this user opens a Word document and does a "Save As" back to the
network Windows XP crashes out, blue screens (no message) and restarts. If
you open the same document and "Save As" to a local drive the PC doesn't
crash.
I have opened Word with the /a switch and tried the same process, again
saving locally is ok but to the network crashes the PC. I assume from this
that the issue is not with Word and its Add-Ins/Templates.

However, if I run these tests again but disabling AntiVirus auto-protect
then the PC doesn't reboot. So somewhere along the line the issue is linked
with AntiVirus and saving to the network.
As I said before because of the version of AntiVirus there is no Office
plug-in to disable.

Any help would be much appreciated before the PC is thrown out onto the
street as scrap!!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike.

The problem is with Norton antivirus not with the PC. Nortons is known for
causing trouble with the OS it locks things it shouldn't I personally will
never use the software. have you tried lowering the security settings on
Nortons to see if that helps if you are running the firewall software that
might be causing the trouble. You should also try installing another AV
program and see if it causes the same problem.

Rudi,

Thanks for such a prompt response, my only issue with this is that it's more
of a workaround than a solution. Other PC's with the same set-up seem to
function without the same issues (although they mostly use Office 97).
However I have removed the extensions DOT, DOC and XL? from the list of
files that AntiVirus scans during its auto protect until a fix is found.

Cheers,

Mike
