Everytime try to save and close get the following:

You're saving locally (not on a network, CD, etc.),
right? If not, try saving locally (desktop, etc.) and
then copy the file over to the network, CD, whatever.

If you are working locally, try opening Word with /a
switch:
Start -> Run, type in "winword /a" (no quotes). Type
some text and try to save and close. If this works okay,
then you probably have some addin (or possibly a damaged
normal.dot) causing a problem. Give the following
articles a look over to clean things out:
