winword.exe does not end when MS Word is closed

My dad is having some trouble with MS word. Whenever he closes it, the
process winword.exe doesn't end. This prevents the computer from going on
standby. I have suggested a repair install of office, but he wants to know
if there is something he should try first. Any suggestions?
