I encountered same problem in both MS Word and Excel.
Following directions in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
# 307814 to rename Normal.dot file did not resolve
problem.

Also tried Start / Run / winword (without /a) ... same error

Next: tried ... Word / Help / Detect and Repair ... process did not fix problem
