Winword.exe process remains open after closing Word application

Winword.exe (process) continues to run even though the
WORD2002 application has been closed. This occurs as
long as Outlook is open (Outlook is configured to use
Word as the email editor). This creates a problem with
Word macros, such as HelpBreeze system. Outlook must be
closed in order to open the macros correctly.

Is this behavior normal, expected? Is there a way to
control Word so that it is only opened when necessary to
create an email in Outlook, and closes when finished
creating the email message - without actually closing
Outlook?

I have similiar problems with other applications not
closing their processes even when the application is
closed - or appears closed. Is there a setup problem
with this installation of Windows XP that causes this
behavior? (This occurs with the ATI Multimedia
application on the same machine. The user closes the TV
application within the ATI suite, but ATIMMC.exe
continues to show in the Process list, and the user
cannot open the TV application until closing the process
manually.)

Hi Waldo

Yes, the winword 'process' continues to run until Outlook is closed. This is
to provide a performance boost to Outlook as once Word has been loaded in a
session, it will be available 'instantly' whenever you need to create or
edit an email.

Thanks for the reply.....

Any way to stop this 'enhanced' behavior, short of using
another editor for Outlook?

Not that I am aware of. If you uncheck the option to use Word as the Email
Editor in Outlook, then you will be able to use Outlook's built in editor
and that will remove the problem. However, you lose some of the useful
features of Word such as AutoText for stock replies!
