within a formula

How can I instead of saying
=VLOOKUP($D3,'V:[Tn150704.xls]Tn150704'!$B$1:$F$1296,5,FALSE)

have the name of the file in a cell and tell the formula to look at the
content of the cell . So a1 would have 'V:[Tn150704.xls]Tn150704'!

the formula looks not at the cell but understands whats in the cell.
=VLOOKUP($D3,'V:(content of a1)!$B$1:$F$1296,5,FALSE)

Check out the INDIRECT( ) function in Excel help - this will do what
you want, although the file Tn150704.xls would have to be opened for it
to work in this case.

You'd want to use the =indirect() function, but that only works if the "sending"
workbook is open.

Laurent Longre has an addin (morefunc.xll) at:
http://xcell05.free.fr/

That includes =indirect.ext() that may help you.
