wits end with media player

Hello Folks,
It has been while....
I am using XP, Office 2003 and had recently installed a suite of
power plugs on several computers.
On my HP X2100, the videos (most of them) won't play in ppt or
mplay32.exe but will play in Windows Media Player 10. I have checked
the registry and read all the great help pages listed in this forum.
Uninstalling Power Plugs Video Backgrounds, transitions and others did
not help.
The wierd thing is I am running the same OS and ppt supplimental
software on an HP X8000 flawlessly.
Would be a great help if someone has an idea before I do a complete
reinstall of Windows XP. I am making a ppt about the hurricane (to the
tune of Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams)and would like to show
it Monday.

Please help,

Before you go to the bother and hassle of rebuilding your machine from
scratch, there is a new tool that might just solve your problems: PFC Media.

This PPT add-in allows you to insert your videos and sounds so that they
will play, no matter what the machine is like and no matter what machine is
used. Check it out at:

Yes, you will. However - you will likely find that the process goes better
with the tool.

I apprecaite this. I am just puzzled as to why media player (not
WIndows Media Player)will not play the videos. The sound plays, you can
here the track, but the video won't play. Is it possible to ininstall
and reinstall mplay32.exe? Anyone?

Rich,

The first step would be to use a utility like GSpot to determine what type
of format the video is and what codec is being used in them. You can then
determine if the codec is installed on the machine properly. The other
thing I would do is check for upgraded video drivers for your video card.
Hope this helps but if not be certain to holler back.

Ok Austin, my codecs are all installed and my video card driver is up
to date. Still, the archaic media player won't play certain avi's. They
all play in Windows Media Player. Is there a way to uninstall and
reinstall media player without doing the entire windows reinstallation?
Thanks.

You can download and reinstall the WMP and see if it straightens things out.
(It often does.)
